Our Outdoor and Environmental Education students and alumni

Students range from young adults who have recently completed undergraduate degrees to professionals returning to study after several years, and in some cases even decades, working in the field.

Reshna Alex

'The programme was more than technical skills, focusing on the foundations of what it means to be an educator. We experience, reflect and learn as individuals and as a group. There is a lot to learn and knowledge within the diverse group. The programme team is supportive and encourages you to explore as much as you can during this process.'

Jerry Isaak

'The faculty in the MSc programme were instrumental in my career development. They challenged me to think more critically about our field and my own practice. I frequently refer back to the lessons I learned at Edinburgh as I plan and facilitate my own courses.'

'I am grateful that the lecturers are open to discussion and debate, and for hearing alternative viewpoints. I have felt supported to question and explore the material. That being said, the times we get out onto the hill or the river have also been fantastic and it has been great to explore Scotland with our cohort!'

Andy Macbeth

'Using the outdoors as a teaching and learning environment while promoting sustainable thinking and practice has never been more important and this course has given me the skills and confidence to feel that my practice in this area will help make a positive difference.'

Charlotte Megret

'The combination of academic courses and practical courses (especially residential ones) created plenty of opportunities to observe and reflect on different teaching practices. The courses were all very different, and I thoroughly enjoyed that diversity as I believed they helped me reflect and improve my own practice.'

'The course has given me the confidence to challenge old, outdated practices. I have refined my critical thinking, and this has influenced the course I now design, plan and teach.'

'It’s varied, fun, interesting, and there’s a lot of freedom to research whatever your particular area of interest is.'

'Edinburgh is such a progressive and forward-thinking city in everything to do with the outdoors. Scotland is also a really good place to study outdoor education given the landscapes it has to offer! The programme was the main draw though really and the idea of learning from some of the best lecturers in the field.'

'I would recommend the programme specifically for the people who are interested in the outdoor and education. Here has a good platform for you to get more ideas from people all around the world about outdoor education. Also, you will have a wonderful life in Edinburgh.'

Alumni

Our network is a diverse, global community of over 800 alumni, working and making an impact in a wide range of roles in the outdoor and environmental education sector.

In 2022, we marked 50 years of the Outdoor and Environmental Education postgraduate programmes at the University of Edinburgh. For half a century, students from around the world have come and gone (and some stayed), to learn in, through, about, and for the environment. Over 100 alumni, staff, students, friends and family joined us, online and in person, to celebrate the occasion. The event reflected not only on the legacy of the programmes but also on the value of staying connected.

Talks of an online community began before the anniversary, and the conversations since have helped shape our thinking. Working closely with a small group of alumni representatives, we explored what a dedicated space might offer.

We are now delighted to launch a LinkedIn community space for all Outdoor & Environmental Education and Learning for Sustainability alumni, current students and staff. It will be a hub for connecting, collaborating, and sharing knowledge, resources, experiences, and memories.
