Current and recent projectsExpand allCollapse allEsports Ecosystem in East AsiaThe Olympic Council of Asia established its partnership with the Global Esports Federation in 2020, and the 2022 Asian Games included esports as one of its official medal events. The first Olympic Esports Week was also held in Singapore. This project investigates the industrial, technological and social aspects of esports development in East Asia. By examining such esports ecosystems, this project aims to formulate a model of a more sustainable and inclusive esports programme.Volunteering in SportThis research seeks to understand and evaluate why individuals volunteer at sport organisations and what organisational needs are in this regard. Dr Christine Nash and Dr Louis Nolte at the University of Edinburgh, and Professor Cora Burnett from the University of Johannesburg are undertaking this work. Mediating the East Asian Era of the Olympic GamesA journal special issue on the media representation of the Olympic Games in East Asia, namely PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022. This special issue was published in February 2024 in Communication & Sport, one of the leading academic journals in sport studies.This project was partly funded by Academy of Korean Studies.Read the special issueSport Mega-Events in AsiaAn anthology on the social, cultural and political impacts of hosting major sporting events in Asian countries.
