UKCCIIS IOC Research Centre inaugural international conference was a huge success
The UK Collaborating Centre on Injury and Illness Prevention in Sport (UKCCIIS) is an IOC Research Centre and part of the global research network on injury and illness prevention in sport and athlete health protection.
On 8th and 9th July 2024, in the run-up to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, UKCCIIS hosted their inaugural international sports injury prevention conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. The event brought together 200 delegates including sports injury and illness prevention researchers, sport scientists, sport and exercise medicine doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists and wider health professionals to network and engage with speakers and renowned experts in sports injury and illness prevention research. The event provided delegates with the most up-to-date research, providing new insights into sports injury and illness prevention research from world-leading experts across numerous summer and winter Olympic sports.
Speakers included those working with: International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Rugby, United States Olympic and Paraplympic Committee (USOPC), Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English Rugby Unions, UEFA, Scottish Football Association (SFA), Scottish Institute of Sport (SIS), International Ski Federation (FIS), International Cycling Union (UCI), British Olympic Association (BOA), Arthritis Research Canada. Look out for the next conference in 2026.
Dr Isla Shill joins from University of Calgary on a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Fellowship
Dr Isla Shill is the newest member of ESMRN. Isla completed her PhD in Kinesiology with a specialisation in Sports Medicine at the Sports Injury Prevention Research Centre at the University of Calgary May 2024 - supervised by Professor Carolyn Emery and Professor Brent Hagel.
She has recently joined as a post-doctoral researcher in injury prevention funded by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship supervised by Dr Debbie Palmer and Professor Dave Collins. She has experience in sport injury epidemiology/prevention and biostatistics. Specifically, her PhD evaluated injury and concussion prevention strategies within girls’ rugby using injury surveillance and video analysis methods. Isla will be working on a Sports Injury Prevention in Scottish Schools study over the next three years.
