Move & Read is a physically active learning programme initially developed to support early literacy skills. We are looking for more schools that would like to take part in the next steps of the project. What is Move & Read? Move & Read began as a programme to support early literacy and physical activity skills. Children’s early literacy experiences should be rich, fun and engaging, ensuring all children develop essential pre-reading and early reading skills while simultaneously learning to love books, words and stories. It is also vital for children and young people to be physically active. Physical activity is linked to better physical and mental health, as well as improved cognitive function, such as attention and memory, and academic attainment. By bringing these two concepts together (early literacy and physical activity), Move & Read aims to help students form a deeper understanding of the concepts they’re learning by aligning them with fun, engaging activities (eg, jumping like a frog to learn the word ‘frog’). Following the successful development of Move & Read for early literacy, we are now expanding this programme to cover upper primary and early secondary phases. Take part in Move & Read The Move & Read project is seeking teachers who want to help develop a programme of physically active learning activities for primary and secondary school settings. Move & Read brings together researchers and teachers in order to develop a programme of learning which takes into account teachers' expertise and considers their needs, their settings, and the facilitators and barriers they face when it comes to teaching in a physically active way.
