Dr Sarah McGeown’s research explores children’s and adolescents’ reading motivations, and challenges gender stereotypes. Dr Sarah McGeown’s research explores the multiple factors that influence reading motivation, engagement and attainment across primary and secondary school contexts. Her research is in pursuit of raising literacy attainment and closing the poverty-related attainment gap – two of the Scottish Government’s key priorities. Her research has focused on the effectiveness of different types of initial reading instruction, and predictors of children's and adolescents' reading choices and attainment. She works with different organisations (including Scottish Book Trust, National Literacy Trust, Education Scotland) to share and conduct her research, and has contributed to parliamentary debate in promotion of research-informed reading instruction. Her research has reached teachers, head teachers, and other school staff across the UK, via professional learning sessions, online webinars and publication of her research in teacher magazines.
