Adolescent resilience in the face of poverty Speaker: Professor Ingrid Schoon, Chair of Social Policy at the Social Research Institute, University College LondonChair: Professor Cristina IannelliAbout this eventChild poverty remains a pervasive global challenge affecting low-, middle- and high-income countries alike. While poverty matters for all, adolescence is a particularly critical period for development, marked by heightened neurobiological plasticity, expanding social roles, motivational changes and identity exploration. Poverty can undermine cognitive, social and emotional development. It can also lead to increased perceptions of discrimination and stigmatization and lower wellbeing and mental health problems, undermining identity development and leading to limited future career and employment opportunities and social segregation. Poverty can perpetuate cycles of disadvantage into the next generation, creating long-lasting challenges with wider societal implications. In this presentation I will synthesize and reflect upon the research evidence from across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, integrating insights from developmental, social and ecological domains to advance a socioecological developmental systems perspective to better understand how adolescents navigate poverty-related adversity in a global context.About the speakerProfessor Schoon is Chair of Social Policy at the Social Research Institute, University College London, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Science Centre (Wissenschaftszentrum) Berlin. She has served as advisor to government departments and is a member of several national and international review boards, including the OECD 2030 Competencies Framework Working Group and the UNESCO Inclusive Social Policy Lab. Her research interests focus on the study of risk and resilience, in particular on social inequalities in capacity building, health and attainment during the transition from dependent childhood to independent adulthood. She has published over 100 scholarly articles, as well as a monograph on ‘Risk and Resilience’ and three edited books.
