Moray House School of Education and Sport partners with UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report to launch internship programme

On 30 June, 2025, Moray House School of Education and Sport’s Director of Internationalisation, Dr William Smith, launched the Moray House Internship Programme with the School’s inaugural partner – UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report.

The Moray House Internship Programme

The Moray House Internship Programme is a new initiative designed to provide exclusive opportunitiesfor graduates to gain experience in high-prestige, globally renowned organisations. In developing each internship, Moray House will work together with organisations to foster future leaders in education and sport, helping them be identified and thrive.

By situating the internships around the timeline of our Postgraduate (PGT) students, Moray House Internships help bridge the period between the completion of their Masters degree and their next steps in employment or education.

The Moray House – GEM Report Internship

The Moray House – GEM Report Internship will select one Moray House PGT student from the 2025 or 2024 graduating class. During the six-month internship, the intern will contribute to both the research and data and communications and advocacy workstreams of the GEM Report team. They will have the opportunity to contribute to the upcoming main, regional and youth reports while engaging with other members of the GEM Report team.

Research and Data

This internship will focus on the GEM Reports 2026 and 2027 and support data analysis, research and quality assurance. You may also have the opportunity to contribute to regional reports and other products, such as reports on Gender Parity in the Caribbean and Early Childhood Education in the Arab States. There may also be opportunities to support the development and mapping of PEER country profiles and contribute to other GEM Report programme research tasks.

Communication/Advocacy

This part of the internship will focus on the Youth report on policymaking engagement and liaise with youth and student organisations. There may also be opportunities to organise policy discussions on access, equity, quality and learning based on the GEM Report 2026 and 2027 and contribute to other GEM Report programme communication tasks.

This opportunity will be of particular interest if you are interested in:

  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Education policy
  • Education access, equity, inclusion and quality
  • Gaining experience at the UNESCO-based world-leading report on education

The GEM Report as the Inaugural Partner

The GEM Report is a natural partner for the School’s first internship. The GEM Report is UNESCO’s flagship publication on education, with a mandate to monitor and report on education in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of strategies to achieve the global goal for education (SDG 4) nationally and internationally. SDG 4 aims to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’.

The main report and other GEM Report products are consistently used as essential references for countries around the world. As the world prepares for 2030 and the post-Sustainable Development Goal era, the GEM Report plays an important role in helping us understand the lessons of the past 15 years and inspiring countries to meet the aims of quality, inclusive education in the future.

“We want critical partners”

Head of School, Professor Carol Campbell, joined Dr Smith in welcoming the GEM Report as the School’s inaugural partner, “I’m really delighted that the GEM Report is the first. It is wonderful for our recent graduates to be able to participate in a high-profile internship in an extremely prestigious international educational organisation.”

GEM Report Director Manos Antoninis emphasised the importance of partnering with the academic community, “We want critical partners and the critical partners are primarily based in the academic community. We're very happy that people read and enjoy our outputs and get ideas, but we also want their ideas and their contributions to how we can do our work better.” He added, “We are excited to work with Moray House because we are very much aware that Moray House is one of the top schools of education in the world.”

“For those of you who choose to apply for the internship and for the person who is the successful applicant, I'm absolutely confident you're going to have a wonderful rich experience”, assured Professor Campbell.
