Before starting at Moray House, I was in school. I entered University directly after 6th Year Academy. Why did you choose this programme? I chose this programme because I wanted to study something sport-related, and after doing a crash higher in Business Studies, I knew this would be the perfect course to combine both elements of sport and business. Why did you want to study at Moray House and the University of Edinburgh? I wanted to study at Moray House and the University of Edinburgh in particular due to its high reputation and great facilities for both learning and leisure activities. What was the best thing about your programme? The best thing about my programme was the lecturers – they all had very diverse personalities but all with true passions on what they were talking about. They guided me well and even though they were busy, you felt like you could ask them anything. They treated you like respectful adults and were always friendly and easy to get on with. What did you enjoy about your studies? I enjoyed meeting different people and hearing their sport stories and how they ended up on the same course. The module I liked the most was sport events, as it is my passion and the sector I knew I wanted to work in afterwards. It was very interesting having different guest speakers and learning about their stories too. What are you doing now? Now I am a show and events team leader in the entertainments sector in south-west Germany. This involves mainly working with the Ice Show, Acrobatic Shows and entertainment gala dinners. Before Covid, I would arrange events hosted within the amusement park and hotels. The events sector was badly affected by Covid restrictions, but things are picking up again. How did your experience at Moray House, University of Edinburgh help you get where you are today? My experience at Moray House helped me understand how sport events and business works. I learnt a lot of knowledge-based information but also life-skills. It was a great experience and allowed me to meet many people with diverse personalities and understand how people work differently in teams. The qualification was also an asset that allowed me to get the job I am now doing. What advice would you give to someone considering studying at Moray House? If someone was considering studying at Moray House, I would advise them to go to an open day talk and get to know the lecturers and find out more information about the course. Before I applied for the degree, I wasn’t too sure what exactly it would entail. However, after visiting the University, finding where Moray House is located, and attending an open day, I was much clearer and ready to begin there. How would you describe your experience in three words? If I had to explain my experience in three words, I would say memorable, insightful and flourishing. Lucille Tong, 2012 (Switzerland) What were you doing before you started your degree at Moray House? Before starting at Moray House, I was in high school at the International School of Geneva where I graduated with a bilingual IB diploma. I imagine I would have been enjoying a carefree summer with friends and probably should have appreciated my mum’s home cooking a lot more before facing the harsh reality of having to cook for myself once at uni! Why did you choose this programme? I chose this programme because I wanted to study a management degree with a speciality in sport. The Bachelor of Science element was also appealing to me. The alternative sport-related degree would have been a sports science course but I wanted to learn about management rather than physiology and the University of Edinburgh was one of the few places offering such a course at the time. Why did you want to study at the University of Edinburgh? I wanted to study at the University of Edinburgh because it is located in the heart of a uniquely beautiful city. It is still one of my favourite cities today and holds very fond memories. What was the best thing about your programme? The best thing about my programme was the wide mix of topics that were covered and the people I met along the way. I still find myself referring back to concepts learnt at the time as I navigate my current career and I have made some lifelong friends from the course. The timing of lectures also happened to be ideal for work / party balance. What did you enjoy about your studies? I enjoyed being able to adapt assignments to my interests. While my peers had the freedom to use examples from your typical sports like football or rugby, I was thrilled to be delving into slightly more fringe sports like snowboarding, motorsports and rock climbing. This framed my 3rd year work placement choice of working at Snowsport Scotland and I believe set me up for the role I am in today. What are you doing now? A year after I graduated, I landed my dream job. I am the Commercial Manager at www.absolute-snow.co.uk, an online shop specialising in selling snow and outdoor equipment. I manage a team of buyers, the marketing team and content on the website. I am also married to a fellow Edinburgh Alumna that I met during my time there through the LGBTQ+ society. How did your experience at Moray House help you get where you are today? My experience at Moray House helped me develop the necessary problem-solving, analytical, time management and commercial skills that I have been able to apply to my current role. What advice would you give to someone considering studying at Moray House? If someone was considering studying at Moray House, I would encourage them to make the course their own, find relevant topics that interest them and work them into assignments - it is not like school where subjects are a bit more regimented. Think outside the box. Also, make sure to look into all the different societies that exist to link up with like-minded people. How would you describe your experience in three words? If I had to explain my experience in three words, I would say: Empowering. Memorable. Fun.
