UKRI backs innovative child data project

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has awarded £32.4 million to 36 interdisciplinary projects under its new CRCRM scheme, which encourages ground-breaking research across diverse fields.

This initiative, known as the Cross Research Council Responsive Mode (CRCRM) pilot scheme, aims to promote innovative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Research contributions

Professor Andrew Manches, based within the Institute for Education, Community and Society (IECS), Moray House School of Education and Sport, will lead a team that have received part of this funding, for the research project Grasping data: Empowering young children to understand and benefit from their personal data. The project focuses on creating child-centred tools and teaching practices to help young children engage with and understand their data.

In collaboration with Edinburgh Zoo and Glasgow Science Centre, the project will work with 270 children (aged 3-8) in schools to construct physical representations of personal data that children can touch, explore, talk about and learn with.

This research aims to contribute knowledge to early learning, cognitive psychology, child-centred design, data ethics, data visualisation and computer science - giving children a better understanding of their personal data.
