This Fellowship will provide Tessa and all the other Chancellor’s Fellows with opportunities to further perform impactful work and transition into other roles at the University of Edinburgh.

The 2024 cohort will carry out ground-breaking research and build their careers within the research community. Each Fellow will benefit from a tailored programme designed to help them achieve their research, innovation and leadership goals over the next five years.

Tessa Strain

An Alumna of the University, having studied her PhD between 2014-2017, Tessa worked in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit as a Post-Doctoral Fellow before returning to the University in 2023. After her return, Tessa worked in various short-term roles whilst undertaking consultancy work for the World Health Organisation.

Tessa is an epidemiologist with expertise in the measurement of physical activity in population surveys, researching the associations between physical activity and health outcomes using device-based measures of activity. Tessa currently works within the Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences, based within Moray House, and is a great example of the pioneering spirit and commitment to excellence that Moray House promotes.

I analyse large-scale physical activity data to understand associations with health outcomes and identify at risk groups, which ultimately informs national and international policies. I'm particularly interested in improving the measurement of physical activity in national surveys and understanding how new technologies such as wearable trackers can be included.
