How to Educate our Children: The Tasks of Qualification, Allocation and Socialisation in Comparative Perspective This public lecture, hosted by the Advanced Quantitative Research in Education Thematic Hub (AQRiE Hub), is part of the Stewart Alan Robertson Lecture Series funded by the Robertson Endowment.About the EventEducation has several functions: it needs to educate students well in terms of skills and qualifications (the qualification function); it needs to promote a smooth transition from education to the labour market (the allocation function); and it needs to socialise students into society at large, for instance by improving knowledge on and commitment to institutions and politics (the socialisation function). Drawing from his comparative and longitudinal research on schooling, labour market, and civic engagement outcomes, Professor van de Werfhorst will highlight that educational policy makers face trade-offs when they want to optimise the functioning of educational systems. While some policies may be positively associated with certain outcomes, other outcomes may in fact be harmed.About the SpeakerHerman van de Werfhorst is professor of Sociology at the European University Institute in Florence, while on leave from the University of Amsterdam. He studies inequalities in and through education, using various sorts of panel data, register data, and comparative survey data. In his interdisciplinary research, he aims to integrate microlevel theories of social action with macro-level perspectives on institutions.
