Edinburgh Sports Medicine Research Network (ESMRN)

We are a multi and inter-disciplinary group carrying out sports medicine-related research. Our work helps improve the short- and long-term health of everyone, from elite athletes to recreational exercisers. We work with the government, other universities, athletes and sport governing bodies in the UK and around the world.

Our staff have worked as researchers and clinicians across a range of sports at Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games and World Cups. We work in physical activity and public health, influencing policy and practice and teaching with international organisations and universities.

We seek to further our knowledge and expertise and produce high-quality, evidence-based research. We influence practice in current sports medicine-related disciplines, including:

  • physical activity for health
  • orthopaedics
  • sport and exercise medicine
  • physiotherapy
  • injury and illness epidemiology and prevention

We provide a space for researchers in all areas of sports medicine to come together. We also provide education and training for early career researchers in the field of sports medicine.
