To help you best prepare, your Programme Director has identified some pre-reading materials which will give you a head start on your programme.

The courses you will take part in throughout the first year of the MAPE programme are:

1. Physical Education Curriculum and Pedagogy (PECP1)  - An Introduction to Physical Education

The PECP1 course has a focus on Primary Physical Education. To start you on your journey to understanding the importance of Primary Physical Education as the foundation for Lifelong and Lifewide engagement with Physical Activity you should access the following Blog posts:

2. Health and Wellbeing 1 (Semester 1 course)

This course on the MA PE programme will encourage you to critically reflect on the concept of ‘health and wellbeing’, to think about what it means to you, what it means for education and for the young people you will be engaging with as a teacher. In preparation for the course have a look at this webpage on the University of Edinburgh website, the concept of the five ways to wellbeing identified here will be explored within the course

3. Educational Studies (Ed Studies 1b)

The overarching theme of this course during semester 2 is developing an understanding of learning and teaching within the context of Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). There is a strong emphasis on and appreciation of the relationship between theory and practice in teaching and learning. 4. Applied Sport Science 1a & 1b

Sport science 1a & 1b consist of 4 elements:  

  • In semester 1 (SS1a) you will study Exercise Physiology and Skill Acquisition
  • In semester 2 (SS1b) you will study Biomechanics and Sport psychology  

You will find more information regarding the Sport Science course on the Learn sites once you are fully matriculated. Teaching and learning folders have specific information about how each wing of the course will run.
