Welcome to Social Justice and Community Action

In this live ‘drop-in’ session, Callum McGregor (Programme Director) and Claire Bynner (Academic Cohort Lead) will be on hand to answer your questions and to discuss the programme, including academic and pastoral support. Come along, ask us any questions and meet your peers!

 

Please prepare for this session by doing the tasks in the ‘preparing for your studies’ section of these pages and by listening to the pre-recorded ‘Welcome to the programme’ information session where the Programme Director (Callum McGregor), Academic Cohort Lead (Claire Bynner) and Student Advisor (Daniel Davis Wood) introduce themselves, explaining their roles and how they can support you.

  • Wednesday 8 January - Friday 10 January 2025 – Welcome week (Week 0)
  • Monday 13 January 2025 – Start of semester (Week 1 of teaching)
  • Friday 4 April 2025 – Final week of teaching of semester 2 (Week 11)

First course: Co-Constructing Knowledge with Communities

All new students should make sure that they enrol onto ‘Community Engagement: Co-Constructing Knowledge with Communities’ as soon as possible. Please do this by completing the course selection form, and if you have any questions, get in touch with your Student Advisor as soon as possible.

You will have access to the course site on Moodle from at least Wednesday 8th January, which is when the January welcome period begins (‘Week 0’). During this period, you may use this time to familiarise yourself with the course on Moodle. The semester then formally starts with Week 1 of teaching on Monday 13 January.

You will also have access to the programme-level Moodle space for the Social Justice and Community Action programme. It is called ‘Programme Hub and Academic Cohort Activities. This space can be considered a ‘hub’, containing essential programme-level information as well as lots of useful information for new students. It is also where Academic Cohort activities take place. The Programme Director and Academic Cohort Lead use this space for programme-level (as opposed to course-level) communications.

You'll receive a warm welcome alongside helpful reminders about key university structures and policies, such as the Exceptional Circumstance Policy and the role of your Student Adviser. The semester opens with a Welcome Week, before the first week of teaching. Welcome Week is a key part of the postgraduate experience and participation is highly recommended. You will find social and instructive activities planned by the School and the University.

Academic Year 2024/25

16 September 2024 to 20 December 2024

​​​​Important:

Students must be fully matriculated to start their programme on 16 September. If you are not fully matriculated by this point, you may lose your place on your programme. 

  • Semester 1 is very demanding.  Full-time students usually take 60 credits, equivalent to 600 hours of student effort. Students will complete various forms of assessments including individual tasks and group work.
  • Students are expected to attend all classes and registers will be taken at tutorials, seminars and workshops.  If you are unable to attend a tutorial, seminar or workshop due to illness or for any other reason, you must email the tutor or lecturer in advance to explain why you will be absent.
  • Teaching ends on 29 November 2024 and the time remaining until the end of the semester is used to complete assignments and take exams.  Students will be advised of assignment deadlines by course organisers.   

13 January 2025 to 26 May 2025

  • Semester 2 can be very demanding depending on how many courses you choose to take. Students will complete various forms of assessments including individual tasks and group work.
  • Students are expected to attend all classes and registers will be taken at tutorials, seminars and workshops.  If you are unable to attend a tutorial, seminar or workshop due to illness or for any other reason, you must email the tutor or lecturer in advance to explain why you will be absent.
  • Teaching ends on 4 April 2025, and the time remaining until the end of the semester is used to complete assignments and take exams. Students will be advised of assignment deadlines by course organisers.   

April 2025 and beyond depending on completion of credits

A Master's dissertation may be taken up once you have successfully completed the required 120 credits worth of taught courses for your programme. A Master's dissertation may be completed in 3 months or may be completed over a longer period depending on the duration of your studies. 

Programme Directors will advise students of the submission date for their dissertation.


Typically November and July

  • Graduations are arranged by Student Administration
  • Those studying on a part-time degree programme may graduate in the Winter or Summer Graduation, depending on the timing of completion of your studies.
  • We regularly welcome online learning programme graduates to Edinburgh for our on-campus graduation ceremony and look forward to sharing this occasion with you and your family members. Online learning students may also typically attend the on-campus graduation ceremony, virtually, via a video link, and graduations are live-streamed.
