MSc CEID Welcome Week: 2025-2026

Specific events for MSc CEID students during and around Welcome Week are listed below. The week includes events to introduce you to the programme, investigate your passion, and introduce yourself to your peers and faculty. It will be a great opportunity to make those initial connections with others in the community and set the tone for an important, challenging, and collaborative year of study.

MSc CEID Meet Up Before School Events

Monday 8 September, 9:30

Location: Levels Cafe (One of the first tables by the door, look for the CEID Logo)

Event is optional and in-person.

Optional meet up for those that want to attend the school events with their CEID peers. We’ll get to know each other a bit before we walk to the school events together.

MSc CEID Welcome Talk

Tuesday 9 September, 10:00 - 12:00

Location: Patterson’s Land G.42

Event is compulsory and in-person.

Join us for the main induction to the MSc CEID programme. Get inspired for the school year, meet faculty and peers, and start thinking big about what you want to get out of this experience.

CEID Community Social

Tuesday 9 September, 12:00 - 14:00

Location: B1.08 and 1.07 (Outreach Centre)

Event is optional and in-person. There is no fee to attend; however, you may wish to purchase food and drink for yourself.

Following the welcome talk, join your classmates, faculty, and others in the CEID Community as we head to a nearby cafe to relax and get to know each other better.

Academic culture at Moray House: Expectations and survival tips for the MSc CEID

Wednesday 10 September, 10:00 - 11:30

Location: Patterson’s Land G.42

Event is compulsory and in-person.

In this session you'll hear tips from CEID faculty to support your academic success. This is an introduction and discussion on (1) expectations and self-study (2) marking and assessment, (3) feedback, (4) dissertations.

CEID Alumni Advice Panel: Student-Only Tips for Students 

Thursday 11 September, 11:00 - 12:30 

Location: Patterson’s Land G.42

Event is compulsory and in-person.

Hear from CEID alumni as they share their tips for success and survival in CEID and Edinburgh. This panel is a student-only event, providing space for questions and sharing on any and all aspects of student life. It is the first opportunity to meet CEID alumni and make cross-cohort connections with your CEID Community peers.

Early planning for the CEID Society

Event is optional and in-person.

Early discussion with those individuals interested in taking on leadership positions in the CEID Society.

Social Theory Walk

Friday 12 September, 12:00 - 14:00

Location: Moray House Quad/Courtyard

Event is optional and in-person.

Join MSc CEID faculty Aliandra Barlete as we walk through parts of Edinburgh, learning about the city while we connect it to social theory.

Scottish Parliament Cross-Party Group on International Development

Monday 8 - Friday 12 September 2025

The semester opens with Welcome Week, the week before the first week of teaching. Welcome Week is a key part of the postgraduate experience and participation is essential. It is an information-packed week with social and instructive activities planned by the School and the University.

Industrial action during Welcome Week

Please note that the Edinburgh branch of the University and College Union have confirmed that strike action will take place from Monday 8 to Friday 12 September. We fully respect the right of our staff to take part in industrial disputes but will work hard to reduce the impact on our students. You can find more information on our website:

Academic Year 2025/26

15 September 2025 to 19 December 2025

Students must be fully matriculated to start their programme on 15 September. If you are not fully matriculated by this point, you may lose your place on your programme. 

  • Semester 1 is very demanding. Students will complete various forms of assessments, including individual tasks and group work.
  • Students are expected to attend all classes and registers will be taken at tutorials, seminars and workshops. If you are unable to attend a tutorial, seminar or workshop due to illness or for any other reason, you must email the tutor or lecturer in advance to explain why you will be absent.
  • Teaching ends on 28 November 2025 and the time remaining until the end of the semester is used to complete assignments and take exams.  Students will be advised of assignment deadlines by course organisers.   
  • If you are studying here on a Tier 4 visa, and move to Edinburgh, you must let us know in advance if you are going to be travelling away from Edinburgh for more than 5 days. Typically, students must stay in Edinburgh for the duration of their studies and you should advise staff if you wish to leave the country at any point.

22 December 2025 to 9 January 2026

If you are studying here on a Tier 4 visa, and move to Edinburgh, you must let us know in advance if you are going to be travelling away from Edinburgh for more than 5 days.

The University campus is typically closed for some period of time during the Winter holidays and staff and students will not be able to access campus facilities. The University is currently scheduled to be closed 23 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, reopening at 9 am on 6 January 2026, albeit these dates are indicative only.


12 January 2026 to 25 May 2026

  • Semester 2 is very demanding, especially as most students will spend time preparing for their Master's dissertation in Semester 2.

Programme Directors will advise students of the submission date for their dissertation.

  • Graduations are arranged by Student Administration
  • The majority of Master's students will graduate in the Winter Graduation, with some exceptions: 
    • MSc Outdoor and Environmental Education students would typically graduate in the Summer Graduations held in July
    • Part-time students and those studying for a Postgraduate Research degree (PhD) or for a PG Certificate or Diploma may also graduate in the Summer Graduation depending on the timing of completion of their studies
