More than just a research method: Using Conversation Analysis in a learning and feedback resource for peer interactions

Abstract

Developing learners’ interactional competence (IC) is important yet challenging. Pekarek Doehler (2021) speaks of how often L2 learners seem to master essay writing and oral presentation yet struggle with spoken interactions. Apart from gaps in teacher education and lukewarm institutional support, a key challenge is a dearth of suitable textbook or other instructional materials (Waring, 2018; Roever, 2021).

This talk introduces a resource consisting of worked examples of peer interactions. Drawing on a core principle and analytic procedure of Conversation Analysis (CA), the resource features guided discovery activities in which the users work through the example interactions and the IC features in focus. Using a pair of examples, I will demonstrate how the resource can be used for teaching IC as well as enhancing understanding of and engagement with feedback – e.g. when finishing each other’s sentences is supportive and when it is interruptive.

The talk will conclude with a discussion on potential benefits of using worked examples in teaching and providing assessment feedback on IC. I will also reflect on CA’s affordances for not only interaction research but also for L2 teaching and teacher education.

Daniel Lam is Senior Lecturer in TESOL at the University of Glasgow. He is most known for his research investigating what interactional competence (and more recently, interactive listening) is and what it means for language assessment. His work also explores how assessment can link to learning via feedback, and in an ongoing project, how to enrich understanding of language tests among admissions, student support and academic staff in higher education.

Daniel's works can be found in journals such as Applied Linguistics, ELT Journal, Journal of Second Language Writing, Higher Education Research & Development, and Language Testing. He is also an Editorial Board member for the journals Language Testing, Language Assessment Quarterly, and Classroom Discourse.
