Stewart Alan Robertson Public Lecture Series - Is Education Enough? Join us for this hybrid, public lecture, delivered by Professor Lucinda Platt, London School of Economics and Political Science. Hosted by the Advanced Quantitative Research in Education (AQRiE) Thematic Hub, this lecture is part of the Stewart Alan Robertson Lecture Series funded by the Robertson Endowment.Presentation title: Is Education Enough? Educational attainment and labour market outcomes across the UK’s ethnic groupsSpeaker: Professor Lucinda PlattChair: Professor Cristina IannelliAbout this eventThe educational performance of the UK’s minority ethnic groups is marked by both high levels of attainment, but also great diversity. Educational success among many minority groups has been achieved despite high levels of economic disadvantage, while majority group members show large attainment gaps among those better and worse off. However, for minorities, labour market success does not always match up to educational success, even for those highest performing; and some groups lag behind in both their educational and economic outcomes. In this lecture, I examine the educational and labour market acheivements of the UK’s different ethnic groups, including the White majority. I describe how they have evolved over time; and discuss what can help explain differences both in educational performance and in the link between education and employment. I reflect on what we have learnt, and the implications for the future.About the speakerLucinda Platt joined the LSE in 2013 having previously worked at the University of Essex and at the Institute of Education where she was Director of the Millennium Cohort Study. A quantitative sociologist, her work has focused on inequalities in income, poverty, education and employment, particularly those relating to ethnicity, migration and disability. She has been Co-Investigator on Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study since its inception and continues to lead on Ethnicity and Immigration within the study. From 2019-2025 she was a Panel Member of the IFS Deaton Review of Inequalities, contributing both to the evidence volume and the volume providing the panel conclusions. She is currently Co-Investigator with colleagues at IFS of an ESRC-funded programme of work on ethnic inequalities across the lifecourse. **MS Teams login details will be sent to you in an auto-generated confirmation message from Eventbrite upon completion of your registration.
