Alison studied on the MSc Education Early Childhood Practice and Froebel pathway. She now works as the Head of Wester Coates Nursery School. It took considerable thought before undertaking an MSc Education at the University of Edinburgh. After all I had not undertaken any rigorous academic study since I qualified as a teacher several decades before – in the days prior to computers and the World Wide Web! I was also running a kindergarten and supporting my family.Yet the urge to do so was strong. I was enthusiastic to work towards a degree – and particularly keen to encourage the establishment of the Froebelian modules.Almost two years on from graduating... I remain delighted that I embarked on the course and completed it. The overarching emotion I am left with is: it was all very worthwhile! There were times of near despair as deadlines loomed, or readings seemed difficult, but the overarching emotion I am left with is: it was all very worthwhile! The content of the course was relevant to my day-to-day work and enhanced much of my thinking; the meeting of student minds proved to serve each of us with challenge as we debated points, and for me the most positive thing is the impact it has had on the children and adults with whom I work. The staff running the course are always there to offer support, chide when necessary and celebrate your successes. Perhaps not all plain-sailing if you have many life aspects to juggle, but the staff running the course are always there to offer support, chide when necessary and celebrate your successes. In the present-day climate of uncertainty over education, content of education, job prospects and AI, I would strongly advocate pursuing this particular degree, widening one’s own knowledge, and hopefully use the experience and new learning to improve children and young people’s opportunities.
